Ethics in Forensic Science

Do we as forensic scientists have a true understanding of ethics? We believe we are ethical people, we do good work, we help society, but do we truly understand the role ethics plays in meeting Paul Kirk's vision?

Justice can only be served by involving highly trained and motivated scientists dedicated to providing an ethical approach to the analysis and interpretation of physical evidence. The 2009 National Academies of Science report on Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward states that, "code of ethics should be in place across all forensic organizations to which all forensic practitioners and laboratories should adhere."

An ethical approach increases the success in both investigations and trial by presenting evidence in a proper light and ensuring public trust.

This course is designed to familiarize your staff with the basic principles of ethics and professional codes of conduct and their impact on the decision making faced by forensic professionals.

Basic Crime Scene Processing

The field of forensic is an evolving and challenging aspect of criminal investigation. Participants in this course will learn techniques of crime scene procedure including the recognition, collection, and preservation of physical evidence. This course is targeted for patrol officers and new members of crime scene specialty units with minimal crime scene investigation experience.

Introduction to Forensic Science

Every crime scene tells a story, it the duty of every investigator and tier of fact to read that story. The key to a successful forensic case is possessing the knowledge to recognize the significance of materials left at a crime scene. Forensic science is fundamental to this aspect of the case presentation.

This introductory course is designed to familiarize the student with the basic principles of the forensic sciences. The course consists of a lecture/discussion session. Topics include the recognition, identification, individualization and evaluation of physical evidence such as: hair, fibers, chemicals, blood, Seaman, glass, fingerprints, documents, firearms and toolmarks.

This course is targeted for law enforcement and court personnel who apply forensic science techniques in the criminal justice system.
